Dental sealants consist of thin, acrylic coatings that are applied to the outer surfaces of a person’s back teeth. Once they have been applied, the sealants will protect the teeth from dangerous materials that can cause cavities and decay. Dental sealants represent one of the most effective ways to prevent serious damage to the back teeth. These teeth tend to feature deep grooves and fissures that are very difficult to reach, even when proper brushing and flossing techniques are used. Dental sealants smooth out these deeply pitted areas, making it more difficult for harmful bacteria and acids to cause damage.

People of all ages receive dental sealants. Children often have sealants applied to their baby teeth, as these teeth typically have particularly deep pits that are prone to damage and decay. This can make dental sealants a great method for protecting the teeth while the child continues to develop their brushing and flossing habits. Many adults also receive dental sealants because they are one of the best-proven methods for protecting a person’s teeth from dangerous oral bacteria and acids.

When applying dental sealants, we start by thoroughly cleaning all of the teeth that are designated for sealing. An acidic solution is used to roughen the outer surfaces of the teeth. This will allow the acrylic sealant coating to bond with the teeth more easily. Once the teeth have been prepped, the sealant material will be applied over the teeth and allowed to harden. With proper care, dental sealants should perform effectively in blocking harmful bacteria and acids from accessing the teeth for ten years or longer.

Remember, even though dental sealants will go a long way towards protecting your teeth, you still need to do your part to maintain positive oral health and a beautiful smile.
